"St. George's Says Fond Farewell To Founding Member
MRS. FREDA MAXINE KELLY-BURROWS
1915-2003
Funeral services were held this Saturday past (August 16, 2003) for 88 year old founding member, Mrs. Freda Burrows.
Freda Maxine Burrows was born in the city of Nassau on November 27, 1915, to Frank and Florence Kelly. At a very early age Freda attended Worrell School where she learned to Crochet and Smock. Upon the death of her mother, Freda, being the oldest child, left school to care for her father and younger sisters.
Freda met the man of her dreams in the person of Harcourt Burrows and they were married on June 6th, 1940 at St. Agnes Church, Nassau. This union produced two sons, De'Ynza and Doyle. The Burrows family later took up residence in Sears Addition (later known as the Valley) where they were some of the founding members of St. George's Parish.
The Burrows' residence had an open door policy and the Valley Boys Junkanoo Group can attest to that. For years the group used the yard as their Junkanoo Shack. The Pioneer Sporting Club meetings were also held at the residence. As a result of these young men congregating at her home, she developed a strong interest for Junkanoo and track and field.
Freda was employed at Kelly Motors and ABC Motors for over 40 years.
Freda slipped away quietly at the Princess Margaret Hospital at 9:20 Pm on Tuesday August 12, 2003.
She is survived by her children De'Ynza and Alfreda; Doyle and Judith and other family and friends.
